Who Is Kim Jong Un and Why Does He Matter?
Kim Jong Un is the leader of North Korea. He took power in December 2011 after his father, Kim Jong Il, died. He is General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission, which is the top state post.
He is the third leader from the Kim family. His grandfather, Kim Il Sung, ruled first, and his father came next. He matters because North Korea has nuclear weapons and long range missiles. His choices can change safety and peace talks in Asia and the world.
Kim Jong Un Current Status as of October 19, 2026
Status Check: In the latest reports checked for this page, Kim Jong Un is still the ruling leader of North Korea.
In February 2026, the ruling party held its 9th Congress, and Kim was chosen again as General Secretary. In March 2026, after a parliament vote, he was chosen again as head of the State Affairs Commission. Pak Thae Song stayed on as Premier. At the same Congress, his sister Kim Yo Jong moved up to a full department director in the party.
Through 2026 he has been seen at many weapons events. In January he watched a test of hypersonic missiles. State media later showed him at a large munitions factory in May. He also keeps close ties with Russia and China. North Korea sent troops to support Russia, and Kim opened new housing for families of soldiers who died there. He sent a letter to China’s leader Xi Jinping, and Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko visited him in Pyongyang.
His daughter, Kim Ju Ae, stood beside him at a parade on February 25, 2026, and at a rocket test in March. Some experts think she may lead one day. North Korea has not said so, so this is only a guess.
Be Careful With Rumors: Fake stories about his health, death or love life spread often online. Wait for several trusted news groups before you believe or share any big claim.

Early Life and Family Background
Kim Jong Un is the second of three children of Kim Jong Il and Ko Yong Hui. He grew up inside the powerful Kim family, far from public view. Very little was shown about his childhood, so most details come from outside reports. He is known as a fan of American basketball and Michael Jordan, and former player Dennis Rodman has visited him in North Korea.
Career
In September 2010, Kim was made a four star general, though no army work was known. After his father died in December 2011, he became leader. In February 2013, his government held its first nuclear test. In December 2013, his uncle Jang Song Thaek was put to death for treason. In February 2017, his half brother Kim Jong Nam died at the airport in Kuala Lumpur. Many countries blame North Korea, which denies it.
On June 12, 2018, he met United States President Donald Trump in Singapore. They met again at the border on June 30, 2019. The talks did not bring a lasting deal. In September 2025, he told parliament that North Korea is a nuclear state. In October 2025, he watched a large military parade for the 80th birthday of the ruling party. He has also promised new money plans for the next five years, with a goal of a better life for citizens.
Age
His real birth year is not clear. North Korea says 1982. The United States Treasury listed 1984, and some sources say 1983. On October 19, 2026, he would be 42 by the 1984 date, 43 by 1983, or 44 by 1982. Most outside reports use 1984.
Religion
Kim Jong Un has never named a personal religion. North Korea teaches its own state belief, called Juche, which stresses self reliance and puts the Kim family at the center. Outside groups say people there have little freedom to practice a faith.
Wife
His wife is Ri Sol Ju. Reports say they married around 2009, and state media first showed her as his wife in 2012. The couple are said to have three children. Only Kim Ju Ae is often seen in public. The other two, said to be sons, are kept out of view.
Net Worth
There is no proven number for his net worth. The state owns most of the country’s money, and the family does not share its private wealth. Websites that print a dollar figure are only guessing, so treat them with care.
Parents
His father, Kim Jong Il, led North Korea until he died on December 17, 2011. His mother, Ko Yong Hui, was a dancer born in Japan, and she died in 2004. He has an older brother, Kim Jong Chol, and a younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, who is now a top party official.
Height
North Korea has never shared his height. Outside guesses are usually near 170 centimeters, which is about 5 feet 7 inches. Treat this as an estimate.
Education
Reports say he went to school in Switzerland as a boy, at the International School of Berne and a public school nearby, using a fake name. He later studied at Kim Il Sung University from 2002 to 2007 and also trained at a military university, where he earned an officer degree.
State of Origin
North Korea is a single country with provinces, not states. Kim Jong Un is believed to have been born in Pyongyang, the capital. Because the Kim family keeps its history secret, even this detail comes from reports and not from public records.
Social Media Links
Kim Jong Un has no personal social media accounts. News about him comes from state media and outside news groups. These pages are a good place to start:
