What to Know About Joel Lovell
Early Life and Family Background
Joel Lovell is originally from upstate New York. He has not shared the names of his childhood town, his brothers or sisters, or many other family details with the public. Because of this, we will not fill the gaps with guesses.
Career
Lovell started his path in magazines. He said he lucked into a job at Harper’s Bazaar after a friend told someone about him. He then worked at The New York Times Magazine and later at GQ, where he wrote a column called “Men + Money.” That column was described as an angry little wound of class worry among the shiny men’s magazines.
He came back to The New York Times Magazine as a deputy editor and held that role from 2010 to 2014. In early 2013, his story about writer George Saunders was a cover feature. When the top editor job opened up, Jake Silverstein got it, and Lovell then worked on special projects for the paper.
At the end of 2014, he moved from print to audio. He joined This American Life as an editor and also worked part time for The Atavist Magazine. He later became Senior Executive Editor at This American Life, where he edited the first season of the hit show Serial and worked on S-Town. He has also written radio stories for the show on topics such as taxes, the fear of sleep, and working in a mental hospital.
In 2017, he joined Pineapple Media, which became known as Pineapple Street Studios. There he edited many story podcasts, including Missing Richard Simmons, 9/12, and Wind of Change. A speaker bio from that period also said he was working on a book with Bob Iger, the boss of Disney at that time.
